Dad Jamz

I have a hard time gloating about myself but I can proudly say that I have gained my appreciation for subtlety within music, humor, and even people from my Dad. He has taught me to always look below the surface to find and love rare snack treats. I will always love songs with good melodies, under rated studio musicians, and Hammond organs with Leslie speakers because of him. Download here wont you?

Bee Gees - Trafalgar (1971)

This may be a bold statement to some, but it is an easy conclusion for me: Trafalgar is unquestionably my favorite Bee Gees record.
This, from someone who has literally worshiped this band since birth, and was very likely even conceived to a Bee Gees tune.
The truth is, Trafalgar has for many years existed in my life as part of a (at times nightly) ritual. It starts with a small (occasionally healthy) pour of caramel-hued bourbon or scotch, a flop in my favorite easy chair, a silver-eyed fur ball yearning for a lap, and the warm, sweet crackle of needle to vinyl...a pure alien timbre magically leaps from thoroughly worn grooves to thoroughly worn speaker to thoroughly worn earhole. Eyes closed. Mind blank. Mouth saturated. Lap warm. Bliss.

How do you know if an album stands the test of time? Simply put, if you never get to the point where you can't stand listening to it. It is, as Barry coos in the opening verse of The Greatest Man In the World:

Before I heard your voice/
I never heard a sound like that before/
I want to hear it more and more/
Take me to heaven, my love...

1. How Can You Mend A Broken Heart
2. Israel
3. The Greatest Man In The World
4. It's Just the Way
5. Remembering
6. Somebody Stop The Music
7. Trafalgar
8. Don't Wanna Live Inside Myself
9. When Do I
10. Dearest
11. Lion In Winter
12. Walking Back to Waterloo

Especially effective moments are found throughout this record: from the original, pre-Al Green, How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, to the sweeping crescendo of Israel, to the breathless, nearly-panting finale of The Greatest Man In The World...and just when you thought Robin Gibb was at his most exquisite, tightrope-walking, warbling, man-from-Mars vocal performance in the pseudo-lullaby, When Do I, comes the insane, almost feral chorus delivery of Lion In Winter. Sure, the Beatles hold sway over moments of this record, but to this listener, there is a calming purity and transcendental originality here even the lads from Liverpool in their wildest Strawberry Fields would raise a collective eyebrow at.

Download it here, but also buy the vinyl, carve out a corner, pour a depressant, call for a cat, slap on a diaper, and let go.
You can usually find a slightly dusty copy lying in a clearance bin for about .99 cents.

Iron Monkey - Our Problem (1998)

http://www.mediafire.com/?tmimej0immt

This is possibly my favorite album cover. And its not even on vinyl! (click on the image for a closer view) At the very least it's my favorite CD cover. Features the artwork of Mike Diana. If you haven't already checked out the his work, do it now. In short, Diana is the only artist to have been jailed, placed on the sex offenders register, and banned from producing artwork solely because of his art. Apparently there are random checks on his house to make sure he doesn't have art supplies. The problem was that his zine was found at a murder-rape crime scene. For a short time he was a suspect but was quickly proved innocent. He lost his Job as a janitor at an elementary school where he used the copy machine to reproduce his drawings... yeah, maybe he was asking for it.

Anyway, Iron Monkey. Holy Fucking Shit. The most vile and gruesome of vocalists John Morrow (now dead of heart failure) coupled with the most doom crunching Sabbathian sludge. Unrelenting heaviness from Nottingham 1998. I haven't been able to stop listening to the CD for years now. I still believe there is none heavier in "conventional" sludge doom.

Tracks:
1. Bad Year
2. Supagorgonizer
3. Bos Keloid
4. I.R.M.S.
5. House Anxiety
6. 2 Golden Rules
7. 9 Joint Spiritual Whip
8. [Silence]
9. [Silence]
10. [Silence]
11. [Silence]
12. [Silence]
13. Our Problem

Wicked game

I forgot this mom jam. I picked the Wild at Heart version because I would rather see Nickolas Cage make out with Laura Dern than Chris Isaak rolling around with that lady's sandy cleavage and butt crack.

Tell Her No

I can't handle the cuteness of the nerdy guitar player.

Neil Diamond

Two very different but equally awesome versions of the song Apache.

Next - Too Close

I am currently working on a 90s R&B mix and you can believe this is on there. I like how this song is only about putting your boner on your lady while she dances. This is the anthem of boner jams. My favorite part is "girl I know you felt it, but you know I can't help it" and when the ladies sing "I feel a little poke, coming through, on you."

My Bacharach Choicest Cuts

So, just in-case that massive encyclopedic Bacharach anthology was too beefy for you, or like me, it just didn't include some of your favorite Burt numbers and versions, I made this potent distillation mix for you (actually for me).
Sure it's got some of the big hits featured on the previous compilation, and why not? They are superb! But it's also got some deeper tracks, such as "South American Getaway" from Butch Cassidy..., and some not-so-well-known versions like The Everly Brothers' version of "Trains and Boats and Planes" and "Something Big" by Jim O'Rourke. I especially am fond of Burt Bacharach's own version of "A House Is Not A Home," I appreciate the squeak in his voice. There may even be some surprises in there for you...
I hope you like, I hope you enjoy. I know I will.

http://www.mediafire.com/?4zze7gj53hjr1dw

Tracks:
1. Burt Bacharach - A House Is Not A Home
2. Jim O'Rourke - Something Big

18. You Don't Miss Your Water - William Bell
19. Coming from Behind/Wish Someone Would Care - Irma Thomas (I can't even accurately describe how genius this song is, so I wont even try.)

** These recordings are from a live show at Harlem Square Club in 1963 and make me so warm on the inside that I feel like my heart is going explode with happiness. You can tell that Sam Cooke, the band, and the crowd are 100% into what is going on at this show. Especially at the sing-a-long part... and that woman in the crowd is squealing with excitement... It's perfect.

Wicked Witch - Chaos: 1978-86

This is absolutely insane. You got to hear it. Put it in your face.

http://www.mediafire.com/?cy5rjw1z55wljzq

"EVIL PSYCHO MACHINE-FUNK FROM 80s WASHINGTON, D.C.

Now is not the time to doubt your senses - the Wicked Witch does exist. Born and raised in the musical magical cauldron of Washington D.C., Wicked Witch combines elements from alchemical mentors Parliament Funkadelic, Sun Ra, ESG, Run DMC, James Brown and Jimi Hendrix to cast a crazed spell on the innocent listener. An evil mass of machine-funk with lashings of rhythm and blues and fusion delivered direct from the heart of the Witch, misunderstood psycho-genius weaving his solo web deep within the dark studio walls. Trained by masters at the Duke Ellington School of the Arts, Wicked Witch is in full control of his art; he plays all, knows all, tells all. His message will not be denied. Believe your ears - Believe your eyes: the Wicked Witch does indeed exist. "
